Backstage at Melbourne Fashion Festival 2022

The first time I ever picked up a camera and attempted to shoot street style was Melbourne Fashion Festival many, many years ago when it was still held Peninsula at Docklands. I remember nervously turning up with my Olympus point and shoot digital camera, and standing so far away from people I wanted to photograph and being terrified of being asked why I was there or what I was doing. I think I took about six photos then left. All six were truly awful, I forced myself back the next night to do better. It’s quite a vivid memory I have, and thankfully one i now laugh about, but I bring it up because Melb Fashion Festival has always been a constant in my photography journey and this year I was fortunate enough to shoot backstage at the premium runways for the Festival and their designers. It’s a fairly hefty step forward from my first appearance and once I’m proud of.

After a few years of nothing, it was so refreshing to be back behind the shows again, in and amongst all the mayhem that is backstage. After nine days of shooting, I was happy to see the end of the festival, but it was like a shot of adrenaline that I needed after the last few covid years.

Below are some of my fav pics form the week, with my highlights of the week being the Strateas Carlucci and First Nations Runways. I also have to give a massive shout out to all the wonderful models who constantly turned it on for me so we could always get the shot, you’re all dreamboats.

Until next year…
